Dragonbond spotlight - Oryan & Rakzor
about 2 years ago – Fri, Nov 11, 2022 at 09:40:55 PM

In the Dragonbond Universe, bonding with a dragon it is never a matter of choice. Sometimes the interest and beliefs of the dragon and its bonded character don’t align, but they must learn how to overcome those differences to survive.

Oryan Yssan is a good-hearted bear of a man, a burly warrior and pious knight, caring for his people and faithful to the Galadyan Light.

Oryan, by Steve Prescott

Rakzor Exor, on the other hand, is a ruthless hunter with no ambition other than to kill and feed, he has little respect for mortals.

Rakzor, by Tom Babbey

Oryan and Rakzor glared at each other, neither backing down.  Adrael watched, a mix of caution and bemusement etched on his chiselled features.  “Are you two sure you’re bonded?” Adrael asked. “It’s just that you don’t seem to like each other very much.”

When first we met, this Exor tried to eat me and all my crew,” Oryan growled, still not looking away from Rakzor’s gaze.

This Exor is a predator,” Rakzor replied. “And you, human, were my prey.”

"Funny,” Oryan said. “I don’t remember you coming out of that encounter too well, oh mighty hunter.”

The ensuing icy silence was broken by Adrael’s scoffing laughter. “You fight like an old married couple.”

Now as one, both Oryan and Rakzor broke away from their staring match and glared daggers at the Tyverian instead.  “What do you say, human?” Rakzor asked. “Shall I eat the Tyverian?”

For a moment, even Adrael looked nervous. Then, from the darkness of the temple behind him, there came a low, rumbling growl. Great wings unfolded, and a pair of enormous eyes gleamed like candlelight in the gloom. The Magnifex dragon had been dozing, but the very real threat to Adrael, her bonded companion, had awoken her. “I wouldn’t advise it,” Nagasha purred. “At least not yet. We have a job to do, no? Why don’t we all try to get along, and we can try to kill each other later.

It was hard for Oryan and Rakzor to come to an understanding (if any), and although their partnership is difficult to understand, their bond is now strong as any.

5 ways to use a Dragon in your TTRPG

Dragons are often thought of as fierce and ferocious creatures, but in truth, they can be quite versatile. Here are 5 ways you can use dragons in your tabletop RPG games:

Art piece by Rodrigo Gil

1. As a mount: Dragons make for excellent mounts, whether you’re flying through the air or traversing difficult terrain. Just be sure to have a good saddle and harness, as they can be quite unruly!

2. As a guardian: Dragons can be used to guard treasure or important NPCs. They’re sure to strike terror into the hearts of would-be thieves or assassins!

3. As a source of information: Dragons are often knowledgeable creatures, and can provide clues or intelligence to help the PCs on their quest. Just be careful not to anger them, or you may find yourself on the receiving end of a fiery breath weapon!

4. As a companion: A dragon can be a loyal and helpful companion if treated well. They can provide protection and aid in battle, as well as carrying the party’s belongings – though they may want something in return, such as treasure or food!

5. As a challenge: Dragons are among the most powerful creatures in most fantasy worlds, and defeating one can be a great accomplishment. They can also provide an excellent source of XP and loot!

We are exploring all of these options and many more in “Itza’s Guide to Dragonbonding”, but we want to know, which other clever ways you can think for dragons in your campaigns. Share them with us in the general comments section or join the discussion over at our Discord.

Next stretch goal at 160K

Backers have been asking for a comprehensive Players Guidebook--something that would contain everything your player needs to know, without spoilers. We hear you! Our next stretch goal at 160K is to create just such a book

This guide will be packed with information on the world, the characters, the lore, and all of the mechanics of the game from the core book in a handy softback cover – everything your player needs to know to get the most out of their experience. Ideal to pass around the table without the hassle (and the spoilers) of moving your core book around.

We hope you're as excited as we are!

Downloadable content requested over discord

Over at our discord, we had many requests to get the FREE downloadable content in a single update for easy access.  And as long as there are people out there looking for more Dragonbond content, I'll be happy to oblige them.

Next Stretch Goal at 120K

As our community continues to grow, we're excited to announce our next stretch goal at 120K- more exciting field notes from Itza herself, increasing the number from 14 to 21 with amazing art and illustrations! We love hearing about your tabletop adventures, and Itza's observations will provide even more insights into the world of Dragonbond. Let's make this happen!

Coatl brood notes

When young, coatl dragons' feather coverings are sparse, but fill in as they age, with great feathered crests and head disks forming with old age.  Most common body coverings have feathered forequarters and dorsal ridge, with bare flanks and tails. As they get older, they may become fully feathered and their crest may get greater and more provinces with age.

Do you have a favorite brood to adventure with? Share it with us in the comments!

Stay tuned for more exciting updates.
